Gems Take First Game of Doubleheader

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - The Cape Catfish and Quincy Gems battled each other and the heat Tuesday night with the temperature on the field at Cape Girardeau's Capaha Park topping 100 degrees at game time. 

 

The Catfish took an early lead and Cape starter Jordan Zuger (Belmont University) got off to a strong start with four strikeouts in the first two innings, but Quincy picked up two in the fourth and two more in the fifth on a two-run no doubter over the left field wall by Nolan Wosman (Quincy University). Wosman came into the game batting .190 with no long balls.

 

Cape answered with two in the bottom of the fifth on RBI singles by Christopher Hall (Florida State College at Jacksonville) and Danny Sperling (Southeast MIssouri State University) to make the score 4-3 in Quincy's favor.

 

The Gems picked up an insurance run on a sacrifice fly  in the seventh inning (which was the final frame because the game was part of a double header) to make the score 5-3. 

 

The Catfish threatened in the bottom of the seventh, but the game ended when Blake Barton (Belmont University) was thrown out at home as he tried to score on a fly ball out to shallow left field.

 

Quincy starter Cael Kolacia (Iowa Western Community College) got the win, evening his record at 1-1. Zuger took the loss and now has a record of 2-1. The save went to Andrew Fay (Culver Stockton College), his first of the season.

 

The loss dropped the Catfish to 6-7 while Quincy's record improved to 6-7.
