Cape Wins Doubleheader Nightcap, Beating Quincy 8-4

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Their names are similar and so were their hits in the second inning of the second game in a doubleheader Tuesday night between the Cape Catfish and Quincy Gems.

Catfish center fielder Christopher Hall (Florida State College at Jacksonville) smashed a triple that plated two runners in the second. A few minutes later, Catfish right fielder Cam Hill (Purdue) drove Hall home with a triple of his own. The triples were Hall's and Hill's first of the season.

Their three RBIs highlighted a four-run second inning that gave the Catfish a lead they would not relinquish on their way to an 8-4 win over the Gems, earning a doubleheader split (the Gems won the first game 5-3).

Hall, first baseman Danny Sperling (Southeast Missouri State University) and left fielder Dante Zamudio (West Virginia State University) each had two hits in four plate appearances apiece. The Catfish had a total of 10 hits while the Gems had five hits. Each team had one fielding error.

Catfish starter Chad Donze (Lindenwood University) pitched two innings, giving up four hits and all four of Quincy's runs, three of them earned. Bryce Morgan (Mineral Area College) relieved Donze, pitching four innings and allowing no runs and just one hit to earn his first win of the season. Quincy starter Bennett Stice (Lindenwood University) took the loss, allowing six hits and five earned runs in four innings. His record fell to 2-2.

The win brought Cape back to the .500 mark with a 7-7 record, while the loss dropped Quincy to 6-8.

Cape has a day off Wednesday before starting a four-game road trip Thursday against the Alton River Dragons followed by games Friday and Saturday against the Clinton Lumberkings. On Sunday they'll travel to Quincy to take on the Gems before returning to Capaha Field next Tuesday to host the O'Fallon Hoots.
